SMWS 35.232 - The St Bernard’s BarrelThe nose has linseed oil, new unvarnished oak furniture, apples, fruits of the forest and a hint of orange chew sweets. The mouthfeel is thin with no cling. The body has oranges, fruits of the forest, soft leather, and then moves into plenty of oak furniture and nutmeg towards the end. The finish has nutmeg and oranges with a hint of blackcurrant.

Water brings out thin, rapidly expanding whorling that dissipates quickly without mottling. The nose gains more oak and oranges. The body gains more nutmeg and oak, and loses the fruits of the forest. The finish gains more nutmeg.

A superb dram, but water didn’t do it any favours - unless you like nutmeg. Best savoured neat, as it has so much going on it’s a real joy.

One for spring afternoons.

Technical score: 4/5

Personal preference: I’d have another dram.
